Cage Free Hens

Our hens run free on the range

Free Range Eggs are produced by hens that move about with very little restriction of movement in a cage free, open concept barn with access to roam outdoors. Perches are situated at different levels so the hens can choose to sit at a low level, perhaps in a more sheltered area, or at higher levels overlooking the other hens. Nutritionally balanced food and water is readily available so they are able to socialize naturally – and hens are very social creatures – wandering about at will, indoors and out into the sunshine and weather elements. Nesting boxes are located throughout the barn so the hens can choose any place that appeals to them to lay their eggs.

Access to outdoors allows the hens to scratch and peck in the dirt and eat insects, which is part of their natural behaviour. It also gives them good exposure to sunlight to promote healthy eggs.

Studies suggest the nutritional content of eggs from hens that forage daily on a grass range is superior to that of eggs produced by conventional means. These studies report higher levels of Omega 3 and Vitamins A and E, and lower levels of total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and Omega 6.

A new analysis shows that free-range chickens raised on pasture produce eggs with as much as six times as much as the hot nutrient of the moment, Vitamin D, according to Mother Earth News, which performed the nutritional testing.

This is on top of previous research by the magazine, which showed that the pasture-raised chickens produce eggs with:

  • 1/3 less cholesterol
  • 1/4 less saturated fat
  • 2/3 more vitamin A
  • Two times more omega-3 fatty acids
  • Three times more vitamin E
  • Seven times more beta carotene

A 2010 study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture using industry standard measures of shell strength, the height of egg whites (Haugh unit), and their protein and crude fat content determined that it could not detect nutritional benefits to free-range eggs when compared to factory eggs. However the study did not measure the types of fat in the eggs nor did it measure differences in vitamin and essential fatty acid content.
